MT4 to MT5 · checked 29 September 2026

Your broker is ending MT4: what happens to your EA?

An account migration does not migrate an Expert Advisor. Check your broker's own notice, then preserve the editable source and define the behavior that must survive the move.

The deadlines are broker-specific

OANDA Securities Japan

These dates concern the named broker routes. They do not mean MT4 is closing everywhere. Check the current notice for your own account.

What an EA migration requires

  1. 1. Authorized source. Keep the editable MQL4 source, inputs and settings. An EX4 file alone cannot be ported into editable MT5 code.
  2. 2. Frozen behavior. Write the entry, exit, sizing, time and order-state rules. Freeze the broker, symbol and account mode.
  3. 3. Three parity cases. Compare one normal action, one rejected order and one restart or duplicate signal on comparable data.

Also check symbol names, volume steps, stop distance and server time. Matching chart markers alone do not prove matching order behavior or fills. OANDA Japan explicitly says MT4 EAs and indicators cannot run unchanged on MT5 in its transition schedule.

The bounded migration route

M179 covers one agreed behavior across platforms with documented differences and three parity checks. Start with your own editable source and a written rule. If you only have a purchased compiled EA, ask its seller for the source or a supported MT5 version. I will not reconstruct protected code or guess hidden logic. No migration can promise identical fills, returns or challenge outcomes.

Trading risk disclosure

Futures and forex trading contains substantial risk and is not for every investor. An investor could potentially lose all or more than the initial investment. Risk capital is money that can be lost without jeopardizing one's financial security or lifestyle. Only risk capital should be used for trading, and only those with sufficient risk capital should consider trading. Past performance is not necessarily indicative of future results.

Hypothetical performance disclosure

Hypothetical performance results have many inherent limitations. No representation is being made that any account will or is likely to achieve profits or losses similar to those shown. There are frequently sharp differences between hypothetical performance results and the actual results subsequently achieved by any particular trading program. Hypothetical results are generally prepared with the benefit of hindsight, do not involve financial risk, and cannot completely account for the impact of financial risk in actual trading. Market conditions, the ability to withstand losses, and adherence to a trading program can all materially affect actual results.
